The Gato Class (SS-212 to SS-284) was a huge class of 73 submarines commissioned from December 1941 to February 1943. Modified from the earlier Tambor Class submarine design, the Gatos Class incorporated improvements to the diesel engines and batteries that increased their patrol duration. Other modifications increased their combat abilities while internal alterations provided more amenities for the crew.

The Balao Class (SS-285 to SS-416) was virtually identical to the earlier Gatos Class, with just slight internal differences. The Balao submarines, commissioned from February 1943 to September 1948, were the first of the "thick skinned" subs using higher strength steel in the pressure hull to increase their test depth to 400 feet, although emergency dives to 600 feet were done.

The Tench Class (SS-417 to SS-525) comprised thirty submarines commissioned from October 1944 to February 1951. The Tench Class was virtually identical to the earlier Balao and Gato classes, with just slight internal differences. Mostly the visible differences were in the varied armament they carried, and some had extra external equipment.

As the war progressed, modifications to the tower and equipment were common. Much of the plating on the periscope shears and near the cigarette decks was removed to reduce the boat's silhouette while having the added benefit of also decreasing the time it took to submerge. Due to the many alterations at the different shipyards, no two boats looked alike by the end of the war. Also, in an effort to reduce detection from both surface ships and aircraft, the original "lamp black" hull color was changed to "ghost gray" and some boats carried various camouflage at times.

SS-310 USS Batfish completed seven war patrols from December 11, 1943 to August 26, 1945 during which she is credited with having sunk six Japanese ships and three IJN submarines totaling 10,658 tons while operating east of Japan, in the Philippine Sea, Luzon Strait, and South China Sea.

Batfish received the Presidential Unit Citation for her sixth war patrol in the South China Sea during which she sank the three Japanese submarines. She was also awarded six battle stars for her World War II service. However, according to the patrol logs, she fired 71 torpedoes getting 24 hits and - at least unofficially - she probably sank 15 ships for a total of 37,484 tons.
