Benjamin Franklin Class
Quieter Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines
Model featured: SSBN-640 USS Benjamin Franklin circa 1966
SSBN-640 USS Benjamin Franklin was the lead ship of her class. Similar to the Lafayette Class, the twelve Benjamin Franklin Class subs (SSBN-640 to SSBN-659) had quieter machinery and were thus considered a separate class.
Two of these submarines (SSBN-642 Kamehameha and SSBN-645 James K Polk) were later converted to SEAL mission capable attack submarines. The 19-month long conversions from ballistic missile submarines to attack/special warfare submarines occurred in the mid 1990s.
The inactivation of the James K Polk in January 1999 leaves the Kamehameha as the Navy's only former ballistic missile submarine equipped with Dry Deck Shelters.
